Bacteria are to blame for UTIs - often the infamous E. coli bacteria. They're found in the digestive tract, the stool, around the anus and on the skin between the anus and the vagina. Infection occurs when bacteria stick to the opening of the urethra and multiply. The closeness of the female urinary tract to these areas and the shorter length of the urethra make it more susceptible to infection.

There are several common factors that may be associated with the occurrence of UTIs. Although not every woman is affected, it is during these times that women are more prone to getting UTIs.

Sexual Activity
Sexual intercourse is the most frequent factor associated with the development of UTIs in women age 20 to 40. Diaphragms may also increase the risk of contracting a UTI.

Pregnancy and Childbirth
Hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy are factors that may be associated with UTIs. If you are or think you may be pregnant, you should see your doctor immediately if you have symptoms. Take no medication without your doctor's advice.

Menopause and the Aging Process
As you age, your bladder loses elasticity and may not empty completely. At menopause, your estrogen level also drops. Research suggests that lower estrogen levels are associated with a decrease in the lactobacilli bacteria. Lactobacilli help maintain acidity in the vagina and control E. coli growth. E. coli are responsible for approximately 90% of UTIs. Any of these factors can contribute to a UTI.

Suppressed Immune System
If you suffer from diabetes or other diseases that may suppress the immune system, you're more likely to get a UTI.

Not Drinking Enough Fluids/Infrequent Urination
If you don't drink enough fluids, especially water, you tend to urinate less frequently, potentially promoting bacterial growth and a UTI.
